Stephen Baird

Stephen is a public performer on dulcimer and other instruments as well as an activist for many causes. He explained to me the history of public performance in Boston and Cambridge and how he has had to go through many court cases to keep the right to public performance and even write some of the licenses carefully to switch the situation around. For example, he wrote the performance license rules in Cambridge so that you now go to the arts council to apply instead of the police department... this way you are treated like an artist rather than a criminal. And, the $40 yearly fee is recycled back into the artists by hiring them instead of spent on arresting performers.

The man finally got me. I'm sheered. Now I need to buy some new clippers to replace the ones that broke, because I never want to pay again for something so simply done myself. The people at the barber shop were hilarious. The ones I talked to on the way in no longer recognized me. By the time they were convinced it was the same person who walked in they were saying "I thought you were Amish" and "you just lost 10 years" and just generally cracking up at the transformation.

Bike Puja (Wonder Seth)

We stopped by to see Wonder Seth. We meowed at his work window but there was no reply. So we found his bike and summoned the wood elf spirits to decorate it with the local products of the city and gutter.

Surprise

The newest member of our research group walking into his surprise congratulations party

A black man's hand

Every week for the last 3 weeks this guy says "did you shake a black man's hand today?"and then i shake his hand, and then he asks me not to hit him and acts scared. I don't know him. I was thinking that he had a problem with me personally, but we watched him today, and he seems to be doing this to many people that pass by.

Critical mass

Since someone asked a question about this I thought I'd elaborate on what Critical Mass is. Here's what it says on their website: "Critical mass is not an organization, it's an unorganized coincidence. It's a movement ... of bicycles, in the streets." When I ride with them they stop in the middle of big intersections sometimes, hold their bikes over their heads, and chant "Who owns the streets? The people own the streets."

Flower in a teapot

Again at Karma, Jodi got "bloom flower tea". After a few minutes of brewing here's what it looks like.

Soymilk = free, Cowmilk = $$$

So I am at Karma yoga studio and cafe in Cambridge. I order a Peruvian decaf and I make sure to ask for some soymilk. They're like, "The soymilk is here on the counter." I look and there's soymilk and ricemilk too. A little confused and curious about why there's no cowmilk I ask them. Their answer? "We have cowmilk behind the counter. It's from a local organic farm (or something like that) and the proceeds go to animal shelters for abused animals (or something like that)." The point being that they charge for cowmilk. Dude...
